The Spring

Metal, silver, shining

Tightly wound, coiled

A snake stalking its prey

Upon the stroke of twelve

Quickly launches forward

A sudden refrain of

"Cuckoo! Cuckoo! Cuckoo!"

Just Before Midnight

A creeping shivering draft beneath the door

Cringing spine stiffens and straightens

Skin erupts in miniature mounds of terror

Dilating iris, a heavy indrawn breath

A sudden warm embrace,

"Happy New Year!"  is exclaimed

A laugh and the door closes,

With a hurried shuffling of feet

As the guests arrive.
